Hannes Frykholm is an architect (UC Berkeley and LTH, (MSc. Arch)), researcher and lecturer at ADP. He holds a PhD in architecture from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden. Between 2021 and 2024, he was the Rothwell Chair Postdoctoral Associate, in collaboration with Rothwell co-chairs Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal. His research examines housing architecture through observation of site and everyday inhabitation, exploring how spatial generosity and free space can address the challenges of high-density cities. Recent publications include Infra-Ordinary Architecture (Andersson Örn, 2025), a spatial biography of an ordinary apartment in Stockholm's first residential high-rises, offering a perspective on architecture, time, and the poetics of everyday life.

Tin Sheds Gallery, 148 City Road, Darlington Sydney, NSW
This exhibition foregrounds a critical priority for the Pritzker Prize-winning French architects: Urbanism begins inside each apartment, with quality housing for everyone. This exhibition presents three years of teaching and research framed by inaugural Rothwell co-chairs Anne Lacaton & Jean-Philippe Vassal at the University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design, and Planning. Connecting Lacaton & Vassal’s architectural projects, documentary films, research, and studio investigations focused on the Sirius Building and the Waterloo Housing Estate, Lacaton & Vassal: Living in the City illuminates a method based on close attention, transformation rather than demolition, and provision of the highest quality of living space. It foregrounds a critical priority for the Pritzker Prize-winning French architects: Urbanism begins inside each apartment, with quality housing for everyone.

Positioned in the research field of “interior urbanism” (Rice, 2016), the thesis investigates ways in which architecture mediates processes of urban redevelopment. Three case studies - Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles, Casa da Música in Porto, and Wynn Casino in Las Vegas - each epitomize a particular discourse about architecture and the city. The thesis unpacks some of the mechanisms behind the staging of urban transformation, first by highlighting the spatial logic of the threshold between building and city, second by considering the temporal aspects of the waiting room, and third by observing the necessary labor to produce interior “atmospheres”. Together the chapters underline an often overlooked parallel between the refurbishment of building interiors and the economical and political redevelopment of the city outside. The thesis points to the border between building and city not as an absolute formal object, but as a fragile and unstable territory under continuous negotiation. This perpetual transformation of architecture in relation to the city is discussed as a possibility rather than a shortcoming. To conclude, the thesis speculates on the possibilities for re-imagining the border between building and city, using architectural techniques of montage drawing.

Much has been written of the changing role of architects over the past decade. We are simultaneously omnipotent, obsolete, underpaid, overworked, and may not even end up producing ‘architecture’ as it is traditionally understood. In a competitive, global world, architects struggle to claim the relevance they had a scant half-century before.

Surely then, addressing the way, or ways, in which architects are educated might illuminate how we can better prepare ourselves for the rapidly changing context of our collective future. The design of a new architecture school in Aarhus offers a means through which architecture can both give representation to, and find solutions for, the precarious situation in which we currently find ourselves. Perhaps the discussion needs to shift from a concrete idea of who the architect is, to what the architect needs to be.

POROUS FOOTPRINT / URBAN CONNECTIVITY

The ground floor plan is porous and has a transparent relationship with its surroundings. The most dramatic and animated programs - a cafeteria and a workshop - are positioned at the most open corners, to be visible and to give passers by a peek into life at the school. The walls of the building are configured to be flexible so that both cafe and workshop can spill out to the adjacent outdoor areas. With its large spaces, raw materials, and pleated sawtooth roof, the building engages and responds to its industrial surroundings.

TERRACED STUDIO / OPEN WORK LANDSCAPE

Formally, the building is arranged around the placement of two large, terraced studio spaces which slope past eachother in opposite directions, connected by a bridge in the middle. Here the studio landscape provides an innovative framework for learning – each platform can be dramatically reconfigured into a potentially endless number of individual or group arrangements, whilst still being connected to a broader whole, fostering a sense of community and connectivity.

CREATING SPACE / MEANINGFUL FLEXIBILITY

Packed underneath the studio terraces are a host of other programs which constitute the contemporary architecture school – workshops, library, cafes, exhibition spaces, and two auditoriums. Here the wildly differing ceiling heights offered by the sloping undersides of the studio landscape facilitate a sense of specificity in program, yet also are a potential means of accommodating difference in the future.

OFFICE RING / ACTIVE FACADE

Surrounding and overlooking the terraced studio landscape, is a circulation loop containing closed offices, meeting rooms, outdoor terraces, research areas, and flexible workspaces. Placing these spaces by the building’s facade gives access to good natural light, and animates the school over the course of its very long day. The overlaps in program also help to engender a sense of community between students and staff - not to mention placing them in constant visual contact with each other.

SCULPTURE GARDEN / ENGAGING OBSOLECENSE

Too often architectural studio work is focused on the endless production of iterations, without any reflection on the implications of each object which is made. What is the afterlife of discarded models and abandoned ideas? We propose an architectural sculptural garden, where full scale projects from past semesters are put on permanent display for the public along the green wedge of Godsbanen.

As a temporary mobile structure with a progressive social agenda, strict physical constraints, and so many stakeholders, a response to the brief could only really have a lasting positive impact if it truly embraced flexibility. Rather than a statement of architectural form which gives representation to the raw humanity of the refugee crisis, we have designed a flexible, modular system which gives representation to the opportunities, relationships and connections it creates - for migrants, local government, private interest, and the citizens of Malmö.

Instead of re-producing the traditional bureaucratic model of one institution at one location, OS proposes to juxtapose three agents at one site, creating a rotating collage of events. Each of the three OS units will be temporarily appropriated by a governmental agency, organisation, company or small upstarting restaurant. Potentially configurable in hundreds of different arrangements, OS offers an infrastructure for social encounters and co-existence by conflating cultural events with support, networking and education. It can for example allow the visitor to attend a lecture on how to start a company, discuss possible courses with a university counsellor, or check out the ongoing Iranian film festival while trying some newly baked pirogues. Like any operative system, OS provides a platform for activities, without defining the outcome. In the end, the encounters, discussions, sensations and knowledge produced here will therefore be the result of a unique mixture of the different agents and visitors engaged.

The project is a speculation on a future archaeology of the 20th century. Using the empirical research method of archaeology and the analytical design process of architecture, the project investigates the city of Detroit as a case study for how remnants of modernism can be excavated, analyzed, archived and exhibited. The project proposes a series of archaeological excavations adjacent to an existing railroad system, combined with a research center placed in a disused automotive plant.

The center becomes a global node for industrial archaeological research, as well as a tourist attraction with curated exhibitions and training grounds for volunteers taking part in the remote excavations. Hence, the future archaeology of Detroit is turned into a public event, activating the local community as well as generating globally relevant research on the heritage of 20th century modernism. One of the most beguiling aspects of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytales is their taking place in a world not unlike our own. They allow us to imagine the possibility of extraordinary happenings within our daily routine. That the narratives of Andersen’s work find their origin in Odense, becomes the point of departure for this proposal to create a new House of Fairytales – to celebrate the life, and to explore the most enduring themes present in Andersen’s writing.

This proposal engages these ideas through the creation of a public attraction for the city of Odense, that finds its raison d’etre in celebrating the very personal, and often introspective, nature of human imagination. The House of Fairytales achieves this by challenging the conventions of contemporary museum architecture, which often relies on a singular and spectacular form to announce and separate itself from the city. Conversely, this is a House of Fairytales that is not one moment, but many. It is a public park, punctuated by moments of playful invitation that lead into an immersive interior loop. The scale of the new buildings on Lotzes Have follow the cadence of the existing street-scape, before slipping into an enveloping interior world. Themes running through Andersen’s oeuvre and the birthplace itself, are taken as design drivers that condition the experience, typified by a constant upending of spatial expectations, creating a malleable relationship between the museum’s inward contents and its outward context of Odense.

Because notions of iconicity are never the burdened on any one view or moment, the House of Fairytales is able to act as an important link along the changing face of Odense’s public infrastructure, a surreal and educational departure into the world of Hans Christian Andersen, and a generous space of public gathering. The new House of Fairytales, celebrates a national icon through the reclamation of public space in the creation of a new type of museum – one that is at once deeply contextual, while still commanding its own undeniable presence.

The city is now so ubiquitous that it is no longer relevant in terms of architectural thought. Within a globalised, market-driven world, the hyperspeed of urban development is completely out of sync with the capacity of traditional designers to respond. Simply put, architecture in the city is too slow. By contrast, modern rural environments represent a totally undescribed and highly volatile condition in which new, unique architectures and communities are only just beginning to develop. No longer a site marked by nostalgia and tradition, the unrelenting speed of global processes have left behind a weird territory of genetic experimentation, international migration and agricultural mechanisation in the global countryside - a halfway house between the old and the new.
Nowhere is this condition more present than New Zealand’s Manawatu district, a fertile agricultural region in the lower North Island. One of the traditional centres of New Zealand’s wool production, sheep population, and vernacular culture, the Manawatu is now characterised by colossal windfarms and bleeding-edge agricultural science, a situation that demands new architectures catering to a rapidly changing landscape. Our project, Woolopolis, aims to consolidate the various functions and programs of New Zealand’s wool production into one dynamic community.
Traditionally the programs associated with New Zealand’s wool economy - pasture, housing, shearing, production facilities and markets have been separated by both geography and context. This separation is no longer effective in a globalised world, so we turn to cohesion as a means of improving performance. Thus, Woolopolis takes the form of a complex network of programs - processing facilties at ground level, housing units lofted above, with the market functioning as the communal centre of the complex and mediating between the two. The architecture functions as a machine in which sheep can be fed, shorn, the wool processed and sold, all the while housing a diverse community of farm and factory workers, shearing hands, agricultural scientists, designers and investors integral to the wool economy.
Housing units in the complex are adjusted for optimal living conditions - north facing to make the most of daylight hours, and turned against predominantly westerly winds. The whole complex functions as a singular machine - solar panels on the housing units help to power production facilities, rainwater catchment areas release the architecture from dependence on the existing grid and help to mediate the considerable water-usage associated with agriculture. The entire complex is lofted above the ground to make storage space for hay during harsh winters.
Woolopolis is New Zealand’s traditional rural vernacular at hyperspeed - archetypal building forms, rugged local materials, constructed by local contractors and future dwellers. Woolopolis grows without the help of architects, and as it expands it does so on the condition and pace of the local context. Consolidating all functions of the wool production process into a singular eco-friendly complex, Woolopolis is a sustainable response to the motto, ‘think global, act local’.
